I had completely forgotten I had this beer. I bought the Fourpure Brewing Co ‘Globetrotter’ bundle over 3 months ago, which in Covid time is essentially an eternity. The bundle was full of very zany beers and I saved this for last as it sounded like the weirdest of the lot. ‘Cosmic Cafe’ is coffee-sour. I love a nice sour beer and I can get down with a coffee heavy stout but I have certainly never had a combination of the two. It’s the kind of idea that, even before you’ve tried it, you imagine will either be great or pretty awful.
Visually the beer is very stout looking. A little ruby redness mixed in for a slightly cola look. It’s got that classic sour smell to it with hints of roasted coffee. Flavour wise it’s basically as you’d expect: a pretty tart beer with fluctuating levels of coffee as you drink. It’s actually a surprisingly smooth drinking brew.
A quick note on the can art: As always with Fourpure, an incredibly detailed piece of art on the can wraps. True to it’s namesake it depicts a cafe in the depths of space. Very funky.
So did I leave the best for last on this bundle? No not really. That said, it’s not bad. I went in expecting a stout with a degree of sourness to it. Instead it’s a predominately sour flavour with the occasional flavours of coffee. The main issue is realistically those coffee flavours ebb and flow resulting in some gulps lacking in the coffee department, for my tastes. As said it certainly drinkable and is in fact quite smooth. Definitely more a novelty than anything else however and, much like the bundle as a whole, is a good bit of fun.
