Beer Review: Cosmic Raspberry – BrewDog OverWorks

You may remember, in many posts gone by, my complaining about my local Morrisons not stocking their full craft beer range. Well the one I went to recently doesn’t stock them all either, but it did have a fair few more including this little number from BrewDog’s OverWorks division. The OverWorks side of their company has a more experimental focus when it comes to beers, in particular sour beers. ‘Cosmic Raspberry’ is an oak aged sour beer using misshaped fruit that would otherwise go to waste.

A bright, atypical visual to the beer with a bold pink grapefruit colour to it. Quite a bit of sediment floating around but that is perhaps to be expected with the yeasts and fruit used. Heavy raspberry jam on the nose. There is a nice tartness to the front of the beer. However, for my taste, there is not enough of the raspberry flavour. A sharp and dry finish to the beer to round up.

A quick note on the bottle art: An interesting and distinct design from the usual BrewDog can designs. The normal logo has been flipped and the beer information plastered over the top. Unfortunately they’ve then put the beer name over this making it very hard to read…

On the whole I’m a little disappointed by this. For a fruited sour I was really expecting that raspberry jam tartness to be much more prominent throughout the beer. Additionally, perhaps it simply my unrefined pallet, but I have no idea where the okay ageing was coming into play in all honesty. It’s a nice enough sour but I’d heard good things about these OverWorks beers, and typically they are on the pricier side, but this was certainly nothing special.

Score: 6/10
